Oddland are a new band coming out with their debut album here, but they are already known to some as the winners of the Soumi Metal Star competition in Finland. I had personally never heard of them until I came across their music video for In The Eyes Of The Mourning which I thought was pretty good. Always interested in checking out new bands that seem to have some promise.

The thing that struck me first about the band is their sound is pretty uniquely there's and it's good to hear a sort of fresh sound. Musically, I get a bit of Communic, Nevermore's discordant heaviness, and maybe even a bit of Opeth.. especially in the more melodic passages. Vocally, I'm reminded a little of Ville Laihiala of Sentenced at times, especially when he's gruffer, but this is not an exact match either. At other times he has kind of a deep, also sort of gothy voice and still at others he has a nice, smooth midrange. Basically, what we have here is a band doing a heavy slant on progressive metal with halting riffs, melodic moments, and some dark/goth flavor that you might expect from a Finnish band. The sound of Oddland comes together pretty well into a dark and interesting soundscape with a lot of changes/variation in the music. This is the sort of progressive stuff that I can get behind.

Overall, this is a really well put together debut album. Fairly impressive stuff. I would recommend this to people who like progressive/technical music, but like it delivered in a dark and heavy way. I see why these guys broke through in that competition. A bit different from my typical listening preference (if you can nail that down), but highly enjoyable.
