Like a lot of NWOBHM bands, Angel Witch is known more for a classic album than a great career. After the self titled blew people away this band kinda faded into obscurity. I wasn't really sure what to make of new Angel Witch going in, but figured I'd give it a shot.

After listening to As Above, So Below I'm glad I did. This is pretty much straight in line with the style that made the first album what it was. What you get is a solid, old school rocking NWOBHM vibe mixed with a darker, moodier vibe at times. The moody vibe comes in no small part from Kevin Heybourne's voice and it adds depth to the music. It also conjures images of the sort of occult vibe that marked some early NWOBHM. Though by no means a soundalike this does remind me of bands like Incubus, Witchfinder General, Black Sabbath, etc in its sort of occult vibe. Pretty nice mix of heaviness, rocking energy, and darkness.

As Above, So Below sounds like a pretty worthy resurgence of this band to me. I'd recommend this one to fans of their earlier work and fans of NWOBHM in general. Not enough of this style out there these days and this is pretty satisfying. Maybe it's not quite the self titled, but that's like saying a new Megadeth isn't Rust In Peace. This is pretty enjoyable for what it is.

Highlights: Dead Sea Scrolls, Guillotine, Into The Dark

Rating - 3.5/5
