So here it is... a new Slayer album with Dave Lombardo back. I've never heard such a big fuss about a drummer returning in my life. Usually nobody gives a fuck. At any rate... yeah it's the Seasons lineup but Seasons was a long time ago. So what does this sound like you ask?

Well it sounds like Slayer. Rarrr we still hate god even though one of our members is christian rarrr. Hail Satan. I had pretty well had my fill of this album by the 3rd song. I just really don't know why anyone would need or want a new Slayer album. They're such an incredibly non-diverse band that anything they do is bound to end up sounding like lesser versions of what came before. I mean this band hasn't had a new idea since 1988 or so.

I do think this album is somewhat better than the last couple as it is more traditional Slayer with less nu-isms, but I can't really muster the energy to give a shit. Maybe because I'm not an angsty teenager who's knowledge of thrash extends to a few Metallica songs heard on the radio. Slayer ripping ahead with that same damn vocal delivery and same fucking riffs then 'changing it up' with some mid-paced stuff that recalls Seasons doesn't really impress me. The drumming is improved, the music is more in line with what they once did, but it's still the same old braindead Slayer who's songwriting well long ago went dry.

In conclusion, if for some reason you're a Slayer fanboy and really need a fix this should prove satisfying enough. Personally, I'm content to spin the older stuff when it was at least a little original.

Highlights: Jihad, Flesh Storm

Rating - 2.5/5
