The long wait is over. It seems like it's been an eternity since the release of Adagio and in terms of the music industry it nearly has been after about 8 years. After that much downtime there has to be some expectations on this release and the question of course is was the wait worth it?

Well the simple answer is yes. I hope now the band will remain a bit more active as there's no real need for That much of a gap, but this album will no doubt please fans. Alone is everything one has come to expect of Solitude Aeturnus delivered in their signature style that has made them one of the premiere doom metal bands. The mournful wails of Lowe are as strong as ever and the music remains dark and dismal, but without becoming too dragged out or minimalist for the most part. One thing I've always liked about SA is their willingness to pick up the pace a bit at times without really stepping outside of the doom genre or ruining the atmosphere. The only track I think suffers a bit from being dragged out is the longest and first on the album, Scent Of Death. In a way I see why they started with this track since it has a nice intro for it, etc but the song seems to die about 4 minutes before conclusion. Basically it becomes pretty repetitive and dull. This is the only track on the album I'd consider somewhat weak but considering it's only 4 minutes on an hour long album, I can definitely forgive that. Plus the other ~8 minute tracks are much stronger and highlights of the release.

Overall this album manages to produce great new songs in a familiar vein. The album as a whole doesn't remind me of any one SA album, but rather a bit of everything the band has done. I don't really hear any new ground being broken but I think that's more or less what fans wanted. After an 8 year absence people just wanted SA to release a fan pleaser in their signature style and that's what this is. The 8 year gap has not really changed Solitude Aeturnus and that is a good thing.

Highlights: Sightless, Waiting For The Light, Upon Within, Burning

Rating - 4.0/5
