"I learned from church that if you're good you go to heaven but if you're bad, you go to a place where the dead believe they're still living and they pray for death but death won't come."

The Metal Church?

A modified Family Guy quote to start this review of a band who once made their minor mark and never really advanced to that coveted 'next level'. Metal Church have pretty much lingered on with minimal interest, living off past glories more than anything and at one point unsucessfully tried to rejuvenate their career by reincorporating original vocalist, David Wayne. The first two albums are semi-underground classics but seldom are their other albums mentioned.

With all that said, I decided to check out what the Metal Church boys were up to these days... mostly to see what this new version of Watch The Children Prey sounded like. I guess the gimic succeeded in that regard.

This album is pretty much what you might expect. There's certainly reminders of some of their past material as it has a mid-paced and thick traditional sound but the whole thing just seems lifeless to me. It just rarely picks up and sort of meanders along with an utterly lifeless production and a mid range rasp. The whole album just screams to me mediocre as the vocals are nothing to write home about, the guitar is utterly unimpressive, and the whole thing sounds like stale leftovers of a band who didn't know when to throw in the towel. This album just seldom has anything to really get the head moving and sounds like a bland version of what came before. In a way this album reminds me a bit of early Savatage if it was slowed down to have no energy and Jon Oliva couldn't scream. Real uncreative stuff with only occasional bits of true heaviness when the tempo comes up for a moment and some yawn inducing slow, melodic parts. The only songs I find passable are Son Of The Son and Mirror Of Lies which pick up the pace a bit and actually have a little passion in the delivery.

In closing... I don't see why anyone really needs to hear this. Metal Church just continues to linger on with vague reminders of what they once were and the lifeless cover of Watch The Children Prey is a good illustration of that.

Highlights: Mirror Of Lies, Son Of The Son
