Mirror Of Deception, one of Germany's older doom metal bands have certainly paid their dues in the scene as they started demoing in the early 90s but didn't get a full length album released until 2001. This one marks their third full length on a small label.

What we have here is a pretty standard sort of doom formula. Mournful wails, heavy sounding riffs that trudge along... you've heard it before I'm sure. That being said this band never gets too drawn out and their music has a pretty decent punch, opting for a bit more of an uptempo pace than some. Certainly not thrash but not funeral doom either. An obvious comparison would be to Solstice and wouldn't you know it... they released an EP through the Miskatonic Foundation which is led by Solstice's guitarist. Solitude Aeturnus comes to mind at times as well. There are a couple songs on the album which pick up to a more up tempo groove approach and keep things from getting too monotonous as well. Bit of a stoner/sabbath influence to those tracks.

Certainly nothing to reinvent the wheel and I'm not sure why their website declares them 'unorthodox' doom metal as they're far from it. If you're looking for some doom in this well known style though you could certainly do worse.

Highlights: Haunted, The Eruption, Insomnia

Rating - 3.0/5
