It doesn't seem many Russian bands get far away from that country or have much success so a Russian metal act is a somewhat rare find unless you're really looking for it. Certainly there is an active metal scene in Russia, but it's mostly self contained. Well Dark Princess, a female fronted gothic band, is one such act I happened to stumble onto.

I'm kinda used to a very polished and heavily produced sound out of this sort of an album so in a way Stop My Heart was a culture shock. I'm sure not a lot of money was sunk into the recording of this release. The underpolished sound gives this release an almost amateurish charm though and somehow the emotional parts come across as raw and genuine. More or less you've probably heard a similar band before as I'm reminded of Lacuna Coil and at times Paradise Lost in the music. The singing is of a typical female atmospheric mold and the infrequent male back ups also remind considerably of Lacuna Coil. In many ways Dark Princess sounds like that band before they hit the Comalies mark and burst into the spotlight. Lacking a lot of production, this is a far more guitar-centric goth release than a lot of stuff coming from more well known sources. The songwriting is one thing that is not amateur though and comes off very well. Somber, but catchy with enough heaviness to keep things in the realm of metal. Most of the singing and titles are in English but the last two are actually translations and I'm unable to type the actual Russian here. Though I can't understand what in the hell they're saying, the last two tracks sang in Russian are actually my favorites here. Maybe the band is just more comfortable making vocal melodies work in their own language. Their english certainly isn't bad though.

Overall, if you're a fan of somewhat raw gothic metal/rock than this is worth checking out. Certainly there are an abundance of these sorts of bands, but this band has potential and I think they could reach outside of the Russian market if given half a chance.

Highlights: We Aren't Anymore, Cruel Game, Cry, One Last Goodbye
