When I heard about the band Avian it instantly caught my attention as anything with Lance King does. I've been a big fan of Lance since his work with Balance Of Power and am always eager to hear something new with his voice at the helm. Then the addition of David Ellefson in this band made me both excited and nervous at the same time. On one hand he's one of my favorite bassists, but on the other hand he's been involved with a lot of shitty bands like Soulfly and F5.

Listening to this though, it seems Ellefson has finally involved himself with a worthwhile band. Lance King is in top form here as his voice is powerful and soaring. Fans of Balance Of Power should be happy with some of the mesmerizing sounding vocal melodies that remind very much of his work with that band. While there is some atmosphere in the music it's got a bit more bite than the BOP material with him though. The guitar is actually pretty aggressive at times as it gos for a heavy power crunch. Some good soloing is also present and adds some flavor to the tracks. Really this is a pretty strong overall power debut and a band to watch in the future. Avian is certainly an appropriate name for this band as the power within really soars. Worth checking out for fans of Balance Of Power and/or Lanfear in particular as I'm reminded of both bands.

Highlights: As The World Burns, Queen Of The Insane, Blinding Force, Last Moon

Rating - 3.5/5
