When one thinks of symphonic metal from Italy, Rhapsody is probably the name that springs to mind first as they are one of the more noteworthy metal bands from the genre and nation. Of course Rhapsody does not feature a female vocalist so there ends the comparison... or does it?

This one marks the debut of Ancient Bards and really this is pure symphonic bombast. If you don't have a fairly high cheese tolerance than this might not be for you. However, if you love your power metal delivered fast, epic, and totally over the top than this may just be the album for you. Rhapsody comparisons are aplenty and this is total fantasy, grab your sword and slay the dragon sort of stuff. I mean what do you seriously expect with a song titled Daltor The Dragonhunter? Nothing really new here, but the music is delivered with fire and has a pretty nice sound about it. I find this one to be a solid listen from start to finish with some cool blazing riffs and a good female voice soaring above it. The Alliance Of The Kings is just proof you don't need to reinvent the wheel to make a good epic and headbangable album.

Ancient Bards manage to put together a pretty solid debut here and I can't find a weak point in the material. Not a new sound, but well delivered. Fans of bands who charge forward in epic, speedy fashion like older Rhapsody would do well to check this band out.

Highlights: The Birth Of Evil, Only The Brave, Frozen Mind

Rating - 3.5/5
