One thing that cannot be denied about Type O Negative is the influence and success the band has had. Type O are a band who have essentially sprung a genre out of their sound. How many goth metal acts have you heard that try to approach this band's sound (especially vocally)? Type O Negative is to goth metal what Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are to power and traditional.

Type O certainly are a band you either get or you don't. They've always been an interesting blend of sounds and their lyrics of course can get downright silly (Take this album's An Ode To Locksmiths for example). The band has never taken themselves seriously and are a half mock of their own style. Personally, I think that sort of attitude can be refreshing as many people, especially in music, take themselves way too seriously. Musically the wide range of stylistic influences is apparent and you have to keep a somewhat open mind when listening to Type O. On an album by this band you can get punkish energetic songs, dreary doom, smooth and atmospheric goth, heavy upbeat metal songs and this album is pretty much all of it. Really the only way to sum this one up is... It's A Type O Negative album. Probably more or less what you'd expect if you are indeed a fan.

Personally speaking I tend to prefer them when they're hauntingly smooth goth ala Christian Woman/Bloody Kisses and I don't think there is anything to rival that song or album here, but this is pretty solid experience anyways. In a way I think Type O Negative have pretty much found their niche and settled into autopilot on their style. While the albums are still all over the map from song to song, the albums are starting to blend. I suppose they're just content in the style they've established.

All in all, this is bound to be satisfying enough for fans. A classic?... No I wouldn't say that. I'm not sure there will ever be another Bloody Kisses but this is a pretty good album none the less. Recommended to Type O and general goth metal fans.
