Wounds Wide Open marks the 5th album by this very consistent goth metal band who is unsurprisingly Finnish. The country has practically become synonymous with the genre and of course it's put out by Spinefarm.

Really I haven't heard a lot of change in this band's sound since I started listening to em but there's something to be said for knowing what to expect as well. When I get a To/Die/For album I know I'm going to hear catchy pop goth, melodramatic vocals, a strong keyboard presence, and really catchy melodies. I also know that there will be enough heavy riffs backing it up to keep me feeling like I'm listening to a metal release. This album is no exception. This band certainly does lean on it's goth rock influences more than some though, which may turn off some people with a stigma towards that genre. I think it a nice mix however and find it more amusing than anything that some would question this band's metalness. Not like crossing genres has ever been a stranger to metal... thrash and punk anyone? Another thing to be said for To/Die/For is their consistent release schedule, as you get a new album every 1 or 2 years.

Some personal changes have happened since the last album, but they're really not all that noticeable. Jape Peratalo (Vocals) remains the heart of this band and the new guitarist steps in just fine. One interesting inclusion on this release is the cover of Ozzy's I Just Want You which is a pretty perfect choice for them. It certainly slides into their sound with little difficulty and I knew it would as soon as I heard they were going to do it. Nothing too adventurous but a nice inclusion on the album anyways.

In conclusion, if you're a fan of metal and goth rock than this is probably a suiting middle ground for you. If you just like heavier goth metal than this might sound a bit melodramatic and soft for your ears. Certainly a solid release though if your horizons are broader than simply metal by the tr00 book.

Highlights: Wicked Circles, Like Never Before, Liquid Dies

Rating - 3.5/5
