After 5 years absence, Tiamat return once again with a new album and considering I really enjoyed Prey and have liked everything since A Deeper Kind Of Slumber this one was worth a shot. Tiamat are certainly one of those bands with a separation between their older, heavier works and their more recent melodic, goth works which has also led to a separation between old and new fans. Count me among the newer.

My first reaction to Amenthes has to be confusion as to what I just listened to. Gothic rock? Heavier metal verging on black? Pink Floyd? All of these are strangely represented as the band seems intent on revisiting all their eras without blending them together thus creating a cacophony of confusion. On any given track you may hear deep, resonant vocals or semi growls or perhaps you'll find yourself in the middle of a completely unmetal sounding spacey song like Meliae. An utter lack of identity has to be the main impression I get from this album and as a complete experience it fails as such. Some individual tracks do appeal to me like Until The Hellhounds Sleep Again and Misantropolis which are moving in their somber moods, but overall this album is just too all over the place.

I think it gos without saying a band need some sort of unifying sound and this release just doesn't have it. This was one weird trip for this reviewer.

Highlights: Misantropolis, Until The Hellhounds Sleep Again

Rating - 2.0/5
