Like Godiva's new one, this also marks the sophmore release of a newer power metal band that's caught many's attention. While the Godiva got some underground praise though, it took Machine Men only one album to bounce from utter obscurity to a new record deal on Century Media. That alone should tell you something.

The name of this band and the cover of Freak should also let on a little something about this band. In case you're not paying attention, both the name and cover are Bruce Dickinson songs and that presence is strongly felt here. Also, worth noting is that the band covered Aces High by Iron Maiden on their first EP and the Maiden sound is also present to some degree.

Bands have worshipped at the altar of Maiden for a long time now, as we all know, so what makes this band stand out? Well, much like Steel Prophet, Machine Men manage to take a strong influence from Bruce/Iron Maiden yet not be restricted by it. When you hear a Machine Men song you know who it's by and it's that sense of identity that helps the band. Having influences is great, but to really stick around you need to bring something of your own to the table and that's precisely what Machine Men do.

On this album they have brought together a sound which I think should just have a universal appeal to anyone who likes the classic sort of metal sound. The songs are energetic, memorable and just recall some of the moments that made me love metal in the first place. The hooks and choruses rival Bruce's solo output and the songs just make you want more. While the vocalist can't really match Bruce (who can?) he has a strong range and a distinctive quality to his voice. Watch this band close because I see in Machine Men a rising star.
