World Asylum marks the return of this long dormant band who released a few moderately successful 80s melodic rock/metal albums. They've had some activity beyond the 80s, including a live album, but their last studio release was at the tail end of the 80s. Quite a long gap in their releases to say the least and with the recruitment of Wade Black on vocals you had to know the sound was going to be a bit different.

Listening to this album is sort of like listening to 17 years of development all at once. The sound is completely changed to something much more out of the current heavy power metal scene. There are touches of the old as sometimes it has some melodic sort of choruses that harken back to a previous era and some rather moody parts which are also more melodic in nature. Those moody slow parts remind me a bit of some of Wade's work on Crimson Glory - Astronomica (in other words, when he wasn't screaming) and the overall sound isn't that far removed from his work in Seven Witches. The guitar sound is generally heavy with some melodic moments scattered throughout and some great shred soloing.

I'm not sure of what old fans will think of this material. It will probably be a mixed reaction as it is a vastly different sound but it's hard to say what a band will want to do when you haven't really heard from them in 17 years. That's a long time in which a lot of things can change. Personally, this is much more my speed and it's good to hear Wade Black once again at the front of this sort of band as I loved his work with Seven Witches. Recommended to fans of that band, Cage, and other heavy american power acts in that vaguely Priest vein.

Highlights: I Am The Law, Behind The Gun, Never Again

Rating - 3.5/5
