Exploder probably aren't the sort of band I would normally be reviewing on this site or even paying attention to personally. Certainly their sound is very commercial and more classifiable as metalcore than traditional metal, but it also lacks a lot of the metalcore cliches which make me generally dislike the genre. So what the hell... here's my thoughts on this debut album.

Exploder essentially sound very polished and stick to a heavy chug typical of many metalcore acts but vocally there's a fair difference from your run of the mill metalcore by numbers. While the vocals are largely melodic they also have an underlying heaviness. Somewhat atypically for a band of this sort of mold, the band does list Testament among it's influences and though the style's are vastly different, I can here where the band drew some of it's sound from that band. Vocally I can definitely here a Chuck Billy similarity (think songs like Electric Crown) in the melodically heavy approach. Also, while the guitar sound is somewhat typical of modern nu/metalcore bands it also is not that far removed from a band like Pantera who also kind of bridge that gap. Certainly this is not as raw as a band like that though in terms of a heavy approach and bands like HIM and Avenged Sevenfold come to mind in the smooth flow of the music, but then the band is heavier than those. White Zombie also comes to mind at times with both music and vocals, especially in the song You Burn Me Up. What this band seems to do that I like is draw more heavily on metal influences while crafting their commercial sound and they don't fall into cliches like grunting verses and whiny choruses. This just seems ballsier than your run of the mill nu band but not as predictable as most metalcore.

Melodic, addictive, and heavy... this may not be strictly classifiable as metal, but it certainly does sound good to me. If you don't mind a fair amount of commercial polish to your music than this might well be worth looking into.

Highlights: Sympathy Love, A Kind Of Evil, You Burn Me Up
