On this one Communic return for their third album fairly quickly on the heels of their last after a downtime of 2 years. Communic are a relatively new band but they have managed to pump out their albums pretty quickly thus far with a 1 or 2 year break between. So far I've enjoyed both their albums so of course this one had my interest as well going in.

Payment Of Existence pretty much follows in the formula the band has established which can be simply stated as Nevermore with a progressive slant and long and fairly intricate songs. I do find this album tends to settle into a guitar chug and not vary the riffs quite as often as the past couple, but overall this doesn't effect my enjoyment of the album too much and the songs work. The tracks I like the most though are the ones which lean more on the atmospheric side and have that kinda dark and somber flow to them. I just find these to be the more powerful tunes as the heavier ones don't do too much to stand out in the guitar department. The strength of this one has to be more chalked up to atmosphere in the songwriting and singing. One thing I do give the band is that they manage to pull off long song structures without sounding self indulgent or the songs getting too repetitive and boring. There's generally enough shifts in the music to keep one interested while not sounding all over the place.

Besides the slightly different guitar approach I can't say I hear that much different from the band so if you liked em before, you'll probably like them now. If not, I can't see this one changing your mind. An enjoyable listen but by no means a surprising one.

Highlights: Payment Of Existence, Stone Carved Eyes, Becoming Of Man

Rating - 3.5/5
