For those outside of Finland the name might be fairly alien, but Ari Koivunen made a bit of a stir in that country by winning their version of the 'Idol' competition. Really kind of illustrates the difference between the music scene there and hear as I'm reviewing the album doesn't it?

In the competition Ari covered songs like The Evil That Men Do by Iron Maiden and Hunting High And Low by Stratovarius and I'd say this album pretty much sounds like his influences. Fuel For The Fire is a fairly melodic, flowing sort of metal release which showcases Ari's vocal talents well. I wouldn't say this release is anything astoundingly new as it basically sounds like the sum of it's influences and parts, which includes members of Kotipelto and Thunderstone, but the singing is strong and suits this sort of music. Fuel For The Fire does definitely lean on the softer side of power metal though and seems commercially aimed with its light touch and catchy, single style songs.

If you're a fan or are curious about a metal vocalist actually receiving a little press than you might want to check this out, but it's definitely not a be all, end all album. Really it's just your typical Finnish sugary power metal with a hint of melodic rock and it even features some of the same old players in the scene. Fuel For The Fire is good enough for what it is, but really this has been done and the only reason Sony/BMG is showing an interest in the area and him is the ease of him already being exposed and somewhat accepted. A quick cash grab from a label that probably won't last, but interesting none the less and a pretty good and catchy album for fans of this style.
