Unsun's debut was one of those albums I thought was ok but didn't really wow me. As is often the case with the saturated female fronted gothic/atmospheric scene the band just didn't distinguish themselves enough on their debut for me. None the less, the first album was decent enough to merit a second look.

Well, second chances can be a good thing. I find this album as a whole more energetic, catchy, and generally memorable than the debut. Things just seem to be put together better and the songs flow nicely. I like that this has a pretty substantial guitar presence for a female fronted goth sort of act. Combining a nice female voice with this kind of energy and good heavy guitar makes for a pretty winning combo. Not a bad listen from start to finish with moments of something more and a release that makes me think this is a band to watch in the future. This is a good piece of songwriting with a bit more attitude than I'm accustomed to hearing from a lot of female fronted acts. There is a whiff of vaguely commercial feel to this, as is the case with many of these bands who tend to have a polished sound, but there's more than enough to remind you this is a metal act. Nothing wrong with being a little polished if it's done well.

In conclusion, if you like female fronted metal that is atmospheric, but still driven by riffs then you'll probably want to hear this. This is a good sophomore effort.

Highlights: The Lost Way, Not Enough, Mockers
