Leaves Eyes are a band I'd put in that solid, but never quite made an awesome album category. Nothing horrible about this, as they have made music I've enjoyed. Just never quite broken through to that next level for me I guess. I do enjoy Liv Kristine's voice though and they do have a good overall sound.

After listening to Meredead, I can say it's probably not anything to change my opinion. This is pretty typical of a Leaves Eyes' album. We have some traditional folk themes, melodic music with a bit of an epic touch, and some good sweet sounding female vocals. Does this album come up with the songs to push this band to the next level though? No probably not. Leaves Eyes are likely to remain a niche band for those who enjoy symphonic female fronted metal and they haven't quite elevated themselves to the top of the heap. Nor are they the bottom though and this is a fairly enjoyable listen. Better than average, but not the sort of album that will find itself near the top of the heap in many folks' overall lists. If you like grand/epic themes, female vocals, and music more focused on melody than heaviness this is pretty good though.

Based on the vocals having an enjoyably unique sound and the hooks being decently memorable I'd give this a solid rating. If you enjoy symphonic female fronted metal than this is probably worthy. Nothing wrong with a band being consistently pretty good really.

Highlights: To France, Etain, Velvet Heart

Rating - 3.5/5
