A band with a female singer doing gothic/atmospheric metal with the occasional death metal grunt. I'm sure you're all so fucking shocked you need to go lay down.

What is there to say about Sirenia that's not been said about other bands of the genre? They don't really deviate from the formula and this is the sort of thing happens whenever any style gains the slightest hope of commercial interest. The music here is generally upbeat and driven by a heavy guitar chug, the production is slick, and the vocals are fairly subdued in the vein of Leaves Eyes/Liv Kristine. Occasionally death vocals back up the female lead and there's also a frequent dark chant thing going on that brings to mind Within Temptation. All in all, the vocalist has a nice quality but certainly isn't a stunning singer and nothing about the music really jumps out at me since it's so similar to other bands. Unless you've been living under a rock you pretty much know what this style (and thus this band) sounds like by this point in the review so there you have it.

There's just really nothing new to be found here. If you enjoy this style than this will probably slide easily enough into your collection. I doubt however that you will be stunned by anything on this disc. You might enjoy the songs but no one is ever going to accuse this album of being revolutionary or a standout in the style.

Highlights: My Mind's Eye, Sundown, Downfall

Rating - 3.0/5
