This is one that's been out for a little while now, but I thought it deserved a review upon listening to it. I recently checked out this band's new album since I saw they were on next year's ProgPower festival, which I will be attending. This is Delain's second release.

April Rain opens with the title track which is a great start as it shifts between melodic vocal passages and heavier guitar that adds a bit of bottom heavy muscle to the mix. A definite highlight and a great lead off single. The sound of this band could best be described as the sort of 'semi-gothic', but more atmospheric and symphonic style that seems to be popular with female fronted bands right now. The combination of polished heavy riffs, a melodic female singer, and symphonic undertones is pretty familiar, but the songs themselves are good and that is enough. Other standouts include Stay Forever which follows a similar style and Control The Storm which is boosted by some good guest vocals from Marco Hietala of Tarot and Nightwish fame. Some death vocals also show up on Virtue and Vice, but these are pretty minimal on the album.

April Rain is by no means anything to reinvent the wheel as this is a familiar style and approach, but it's a good listen for those into this sort of style. I am reminded particularly of Within Temptation and that is not such a bad thing. A worthy release that's a good listen from start to finish.

Highlights: April Rain, Control The Storm, Stay Forever

Rating - 3.5/5
